The Shepherdstown Public Library Foundation is a 501 (C) (3) organization dedicated to promoting, funding, and supporting the Shepherdstown Public Library. It was founded in 2014 to help with the raising of funds to build our beautiful new library. In its second decade it has shifted focus toward building an endowment to provide long-term, sustainable financial support.

The Foundation Board is comprised of community members from the public and private sectors who donate their time and expertise to accomplish the Foundation’s goals. We work hand in hand with the library’s Director and its Board of Trustees to ensure that private funds go where most needed.

Only 78% of the library’s budget is provided by public funds. The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library and the Nourishing Literacy Giving Circle are instrumental in covering capital or operating costs. However, there is not enough left over to create “reserve” funds: money that can be used to support new programs and services, staff development, unexpected problems, and building needs. That is when the Foundation steps in.

Because of its 501(c)(3) status, the Foundation can accept grants, bequests and other gifts that the library cannot receive directly. There are many ways to contribute to the Foundation, including:

• Cash Gifts (recurring or one-time) Donate Now
• Bequests
• Life insurance
• Securities
• Real Estate
• Retirement plans
• Buy-A-Brick
